Furniture Sealants to prevent Offgasing

At our 210 forum earlier this month, we discussed indoor air quality. Many furniture and other building materials have the potential to release chemicals into the air over time. This is called offgasing. One type of building material prone to offgasing is particle board which is commonly used in kitchen cabinetry.

To avoid exposing your family to harmful chemicals, it is recommended that you seal the wood using a sealant. One of our USGBC members recommended a product called AFM Safecoat Safe Sealer which is a water-based product especially made for sealing porous engineered wood products to prevent out-gassing.

The manufacturer’s page is at http://www.afmsafecoat.com/. It’s not cheap at $40.99/gallon, but can be purchased in a quart for $12.99 (http://www.environmentalhomecenter.com/shop.mv?CatCode=PRODUCT&ProdCode=AFM_SAFESEAL).
